East Coast Expressway Phase 2 (LPT2) will soon become more friendly to EV owners as yet another DC fast charger (DCFC) is currently under construction over there. Located at the Shell R&R Perasing, the new Shell Recharge charger will become the second DCFC at LPT2 after the TNB Electron charger at R&R Paka Eastbound.

The existence of the new charging station was first highlighted by Ismail Tahir on the Malaysia EV Owners Group (MyEVOC) Facebook group late last month. Interestingly enough, a representative from Shell R&R Perasing began to provide updates on the project through the same thread.

According to the latest update which was posted this morning, the charger itself has already been installed at the Shell station. Based on the image, we believe it is a Starcharge Titan V3 DC charger.

Regarding power output, the station’s representative has informed us that it is a 180kW charger with two charging connectors. Assuming that Shell will enable dynamic charging capability for it, this charger should be able to deliver up to 90kW per vehicle when it is fully occupied.

Given its 180kW output, Shell R&R Perasing will likely be designated as yet another Shell Recharge High-Performance Charging (HPC) location. At the moment, Shell Malaysia currently operates nine HPC spots across Peninsular Malaysia including Tangkak, Seremban, Tapah, Skudai, Pagoh, Simpang Pulai, and Genting Highlands through ParkEasy.

Installing a DC charger at R&R Perasing is the right move

R&R Perasing is one of the very few rest areas in Malaysia that cover both sides of the highway.

While Shell Recharge R&R Perasing is not the first DCFC to be installed at LPT2, it is still the first charger that can be accessed by both sides of the highway. As a comparison, the TNB Electron charge at R&R Paka Eastbound is only accessible by travellers heading towards Kuala Terengganu or Kota Bharu.

At the moment, Kuantan is the only DCFC spot available for those who travelling on LPT2 from Kuala Terengganu or Kota Bharu. Hence, the upcoming Shell Recharge R&R Perasing will likely become an essential charging stop for EV owners that utilise the highway for their journey.

Meanwhile, the official live date for the Shell Recharge R&R Perasing is not yet known at the moment. That being said, the representative of Shell R&R Perasing is quite confident that the charging station will receive all the necessary approvals soon and become operational just before the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
