150kW DC Charger at PLUS’ Behrang Layby Southbound

Just in time for the Hari Raya holiday season, EV Connection (JomCharge) and Gentari have turned on their second modular EV charging station at Behrang Layby Southbound on the North-South Expressway (PLUS). This location is great for EV owners who wish to get a quick top-up between Tapah and Tanjung Malim. The “mobile” EV charging station offers four DC charge points and is equipped with a battery energy storage system and solar panels.

Similar to Behrang Layby Northbound, the Southbound location which is just across the highway features two Kempower DC chargers with two CCS2 nozzles each. Both Kempower units can deliver up to a maximum of 150kW when a single EV is plugged in or up to 75kW with two EVs charging simultaneously.

These DC chargers at Behrang Layby Northbound and Southbound are priced at RM1.60 per kWh and you can activate them via JomCharge, Gentari Go, Setel and ChargEV apps.

Chargers will display 5kW available while idling

According to the notes on JomCharge, these DC chargers may only display 5kW available while idling and the actual charging rate will increase once charging starts. The chargers will be disabled if the battery level falls below its reserved threshold.

This module EV charging station is different from your usual DC charger as it comes with a battery energy storage system to overcome power capacity limitations. The BESS at Behrang has a capacity of 300kWh which acts as a “reserve tank” to power up the DC charger. The BESS takes about 7-8 hours for a full charge and it can be charged via the grid or solar while the chargers are in use.

If the chargers at Behrang Layby Southbound are not available, the next EV charging stop is at Petronas R&R Ulu Bernam, which is about 16km away. This location has a 180kW Kempower DC Charger with three CCS2 nozzles. For those travelling from Penang to Ipoh, Gentari and JomCharge have recently deployed a 150kW DC Charger with three CCS2 nozzles at Petronas Gunung Semanggol Southbound.
