Google is set to establish its first data centre in Malaysia as part of its new USD2 billion (~RM9.4 billion) investment in the country. Alongside the new data centre, the tech giant will also turn Malaysia into one of its Google Cloud regions.

In today’s announcement, Google has also revealed that the new data centre will be located at Elmina Business Park in Sungai Buloh. However, the company did not reveal when the data centre will be operational.

Similarly, today’s announcement did not mention the capability of the new Elmina data centre as well as the list of services that will be available there. Google only said that the data centre would be powering its popular services such as Search, Maps, and Workspace as well as artificial intelligence

The new facility in Elmina is only the second Google data centre in Southeast Asia after Singapore. The Mountain View giant has also established data centres in Taiwan and Japan.

Meanwhile, the upcoming Google Cloud region in Malaysia will allow local enterprises, startups, and public sector organisations to run their Google Cloud workload at low latency right here in the country.

In addition to that, having the facility right here in Malaysia allows them to address specific data storage requirements such as data residency easily. Google said it will continue operating its existing Dedicated Cloud Interconnect located at CSF CX2 Cyberjaya and AIMS Kuala Lumpur.

Google’s plan to make Malaysia one of its Google Cloud regions is not exactly new. The company already announced this back in 2022 but at that time, Google said that it was still identifying the location to host its services.
