Redmi 13 Malaysia: Entry level smartphone with large 90Hz display, 5,030mAh battery

Barely a couple of weeks after launching the Poco F6 and Poco F6 Pro in Malaysia, this time it’s fellow Xiaomi sub-brand Redmi with a brand new device. The Redmi 13—not to be confused with the Redmi 13C 5G—is their latest entry level smartphone in town for those looking for a budget friendly device.

Redmi 13 Malaysia pricing and availability

The Redmi 13 will go on sale from 14 June onwards in Malaysia, available in a single configuration with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Priced at RM699, you can find it on sale at all authorised Xiaomi stores nationwide as well as online on the official Xiaomi Shopee and Lazada stores, along with the Xiaomi Malaysia website. Early birds will also be able to get a free pair of Redmi Buds 4 Active worth RM119 while stocks last.

At first glance, with a price tag of RM699 you might be be thinking that the Redmi 13C 5G may be the better option considering it has the same starting price. However, upon closer inspection you’ll find that if you don’t need 5G connectivity, the Redmi 13 does have a lot going for it in terms of other features such as display, memory and battery.

Redmi 13 specs

The Redmi 13 will be a pretty big device, thanks in large part to its sizeable 6.79-inch LCD display that has an FHD+ resolution and a 90Hz AdaptiveSync refresh rate. It’s also capable of 550nits of peak brightness, 70% coverage of the NTSC colour gamut, a 1500:1 contrast ratio and a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass over it for scratch resistance. In contrast, the previous Redmi 13C 5G has a 6.74-inch display at a lower HD+ 720p resolution.

Under the hood, the Redmi 13 comes with an entry level 12nm MediaTek Helio G91-Ultra, a system-on-chip that’s basically a minor refresh of the Helio G85 from a number of years ago. That’s been mated to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, which at least is a pretty big improvement over the 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage on the base model Redmi 13C 5G. The Redmi 13 also comes with Xiaomi HyperOS out of the box.

As for its cameras, the Helio G91-Ultra’s upgraded ISP means that the Redmi 13 is the first entry in the Redmi number series to offer a 108MP, f/1.75 main camera, utilising a 1/1.67″ sensor and even offers a 3x ‘in-sensor’ zoom and video recording up to 1080p at 30fps. That’s been flanked by a 2MP, f/2.4 macro sensor while up front you’ll find a 13MP, f/2.45 selfie shooter.

Other features of note include a 5,030mAh battery that Redmi claims will offer ‘all day performance’ on a single charge,. It also supports 33W fast charging, with an hour charge able to get you up to 28 hours of music playback. There’s also a 3.5mm headphone jack, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, and an IP53 dust and water resistance rating.
