Google has unveiled its latest Pixel devices which are finally coming to Malaysia with an official local warranty. For those looking for the Pro series, the Pixel 9 Pro now comes in two sizes – the Pixel 9 Pro and the Pixel 9 Pro XL. Here’s what you need to know about the latest flagship “Pro” smartphones from Google.
Google Pixel 9 Pro now comes in two sizes
Unlike its predecessor, which comes in a single 6.7″ Pixel 8 Pro model, Google is giving users a choice of two sizes similar to the iPhone 15 Pro series. Both Pixel 9 Pro models have identical hardware except for the screen size and battery capacity.
The smaller Pixel 9 Pro gets a compact 6.3″ screen that pushes 2856×1280 pixels resolution, while the Pixel 9 Pro XL gets a larger 6.8″ display that does a slightly higher 2992×1344 pixels resolution. Both models use LTPO OLED panels that offer a variable refresh rate from 1 to 120Hz, a 2000000:1 contrast ratio, a maximum brightness of up to 2000nits (HDR) and up to 3000 nits for peak brightness. For improved durability, both flagship smartphones come with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and are also IP68-rated for dust and water resistance.
In terms of battery, the Pixel 9 Pro gets a 4,700mAh unit while the XL model gets a larger 5,060mAh capacity. The Pixel 9 Pro supports fast wired charging of up to 27W and fast wireless charging of up to 21W. Meanwhile, the Pixel 9 Pro XL supports fast wired charging of up to 37W and fast wireless charging of up to 23W.
With a 45W Google USB-C charger that’s sold separately, the Pixel 9 Pro can get up to 55% in 30 minutes while the Pro XL can hit up to 70% in the same time frame.
If you want all the features of the Pro model in a compact form factor, the Pixel 9 Pro is the device you want. It has the identical screen size, dimensions and battery capacity as the standard Pixel 9 model.
Pixel 9 Pro offers the best of Google Gemini powered by Tensor G4
Powering the Pixel 9 Pro series is a new Google Tensor G4 which has been optimised to run Google’s most advanced AI models and it’s their most efficient chip yet. According to Google, the Tensor G4 is the first processor to run Gemini Nano with Multimodality, allowing the latest Pixel smartphones to understand text, images and audio with on-device AI instead of going through the cloud.
To ensure a smoother AI-powered experience, Google has increased the RAM to 16GB for both Google Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL. In terms of storage, the Pixel 9 Pro series comes in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB options.
The Google Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL feature a triple-camera setup which consists of a 50MP f/1.68 Octa PD wide camera with a 1/1.31″ image sensor, a 48MP f/1.7 Quad PD ultra-wide-camera with a 1/2.55″ image sensor and a 48MP f/2.8 Quad PD telephoto camera with 1/2.55″ image sensor that offers 5x optical zoom and Super Res Zoom up to 30x. The main and telephoto cameras are also assisted with both optical and electronic image stabilisation.
For selfies, both Pixel 9 Pro models get a higher-resolution 42MP f/2.2 dual PD front camera with auto-focus that also offers a 103-degree ultrawide field of view.
As demonstrated in the keynote, Google has added a bunch of AI-powered features to take its photography capability to the next level. Besides your usual Magic Eraser and Best Take, some of the main AI-powered imaging highlights include Add Me, which allows you to use the power of AI to include you in a group shot, improved Panorama mode with Night Sight and Super Res Zoom video which brings out the details in a zoomed-in shot including low light. While the Google Pixel 9 Pro can’t shoot 8K videos, the Video Boost feature can use AI to upscale your 4K videos to 8K.
To make your life a lot easier, the Pixel 9 Pro comes with a host of Gemini features that help you research or get new ideas and it can map the results with your Gmail and Google Calendar upon you granting permission. For a more natural interaction, they are also including Gemini Live for all Gemini Advanced subscribers.
The Pixel 9 Pro series comes with stereo speakers and an array of three microphones. In terms of connectivity, it supports sub-6GHz 5G with dual SIM (one physical + one eSIM), WiFi 7 (802.11be), Bluetooth 5.3 and NFC.
