Volvo EX30 to launch in Malaysia on 25 September

Volvo EX30 will be officially launched in Malaysia this coming September. This was confirmed through a new teaser on Volvo Car Malaysia’s (VCM) Facebook and Instagram pages.

The 6-second teaser features a clip from the unboxing video of the EX30 by Volvo Car’s CEO Jim Rowan last year. However, it stopped short of showing the vehicle and revealed the 25 September launch date instead.

Volvo EX30 quick specs

Acording to Volvo, the EX30 is the quickest car that the Geely-owned Swedish marquee has ever produced. Not only that, the company even said that the compact SUV can accelerate much faster than a Porsche 911 Carrera.

This is because the EX30 can go from 0-100km/h in just 3.6 seconds as opposed to a standard 911 Carrera which takes around 4.1 seconds. However, this only applies to the EX30 Twin Motor Performance which comes with two electric motors that are capable of delivering a combined output of 315kW (422hp) as well as 543Nm of torque.

As for the EX30 Single Motor variants, they take slightly more time to go from 0-100km/h although still at a respectful timing of 5.3 seconds. The electric motor in these variants has a maximum output of 203kW (272hp) and 342Nm of torque.

Regardless of their motor setup, all EX30 variants have the same top speed of 180km/h. In terms of battery, the Twin Motor Performance and Single Motor Extended Range (ER) versions are fitted with a 69kWh NMC battery while the Single Motor Standard model has a 51kWh LFP battery.

In terms of range, the standard EX30 Single Motor can deliver a WLTP-rated range of up to 344km while the ER counterpart offers up to 476km of range. Naturally, the high output nature of the EX30 Dual Motor Performance did affect its range although still not too bad at up to 450km.

When it comes to charging, the standard Single Motor variant supports a DC charging speed of up to 150kW while the Single Motor ER and Dual Motor Performance can support up to 175kW. When it comes to the AC onboard charger, the standard Single Motor option comes with an 11kW 3-phase unit as opposed to its two higher-end counterparts which are fitted with a 22kW 3-phase module instead.

How much will the Volvo EX30 cost in Malaysia?

Over there, the EX30 Twin Motor Performance is available only in Ultra trim with a starting price of THB1.89 million (~RM241,803).

Volvo has also launched the EX30 in Indonesia although only the Single Motor models are available in its market.

The standard version is called EX30 Plus in Indonesia and has a starting price of IDR890 million (~RM251,162). As for the ER version, it is known as the EX30 Ultra and starts from IDR1.1 billion (~RM310,424).

In general, the new electric SUV costs more than RM200k in these markets. That being said, can the EX30 be made available in our market at a much lower price point since it is locally assembled in Shah Alam? Well, stay tuned for more details next month.
