Tesla launches a new charger, but it is not meant for EV

You most probably know Tesla for its electric vehicles and also the company’s CEO Elon Musk. But like many brands out there, the company also has lifestyle products under its banner.

The latest in the list is the Tesla Wireless Portable Charger. No, this device was not designed to charge your EV though.

This is the third Tesla Wireless Portable Charger to date

As you can tell from the above image, it is a powerbank for your smartphones and gadgets that support Qi wireless charging. You may not know this but the new Wireless Portable Charger is the third wireless powerbank that Tesla has released into the market.

The first Tesla Wireless Portable Charger was released back in 2018. Fitted with a 6,000mAh battery pack, it offers a wireless charging speed of 5W alongside a wired charging speed of 7.5W.

It was then succeded by the Wireless Portable Charger 2.0 in 2021 which features a larger 10,000mAh battery. The powerbank also offers a much faster charging speed at 10W for wireless and 18W for wired.

The 2021 model can also be recharged via wireless charging as opposed to the original 2018 release which can only be recharged via wired connection.

The battery on the 2024 model is smaller than its predecessors

As for the newly redesigned Wireless Portable Charger, there is no version number attached to its name. While the 2024 model has a much smaller 5,000mAh internal battery, it can wirelessly charge two devices at the same time.

This was made possible through the incorporation of a hinged magnetic stand for users to charge their phone regardless of whether in a horizontal or vertical position. You can access the second charging area which has an Alcantara suede base once you raise the stand.

With a peak charging speed of 15W, you can also still utilise it as a wired power bank by using the integrated USB-C charging cable. Similar to the 2021 model, you can recharge the 2024 model via a wireless charging pad or the built-in USB-C port.

A pricey wireless powerbank

At USD95 (~RM394), the 2024 Tesla Wireless Portable Charger may seem rather expensive since it only has a 5,000mAh internal battery. As a comparison, you can easily find a 10,000mAh wireless powerbank in Malaysia for less than RM300.

That being said, a powerbank that can wirelessly charge two devices at the same time is not that common in the market. However, the 2024 Tesla Wireless Portable Charger has not yet been offered on Tesla Malaysia’s online store at the moment.
