Cheaper gaming phone with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

Following the release of the ROG Phone 9 late last year, Asus has released a new “budget-friendly” variant that’s called the ROG Phone 9 FE. At the moment, it is only released in Thailand and it runs on an older Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip instead of the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite.

The ROG Phone 9 FE comes in a single 16GB RAM + 256GB storage variant, which has more RAM than our current base model ROG Phone 9 which is paired with 12GB RAM.

ROG Phone 9 FE Pricing in Thailand

The ROG Phone 9 FE is currently selling for THB 29,990 (about RM3,938) in Thailand. As part of its early bird promo, they are giving away a ROG Phone 9 Chill Case, ROG Slash sling bag, and a screen protector.

Interestingly, Asus doesn’t offer the standard ROG Phone 9 in Thailand as the other options are the ROG Phone 9 Pro and the ROG Phone 9 Pro Edition which starts from THB 39,990 (about RM5,256) and THB 49,990 (about RM6,573) respectively.

As a comparison, the ROG Phone 9 series is actually priced lower in Malaysia with the base ROG Phone 9 going for RM3,999 while the ROG Phone 9 Pro starts from RM4,999.

ROG Phone 9 FE Specs

The ROG Phone 9 FE retains the familiar 6.78″ Full HD+ AMOLED display from Samsung that boasts a peak brightness of 2,500 nits and a high refresh rate of up to 185Hz. Under the hood, it runs on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage.

Asus has also retained the same triple-camera setup as the ROG Phone 9 which consists of a 50MP f/1.9 main camera (Sony IMX890 sensor), a 13MP ultra-wide-angle shooter and a 5MP macro camera. For selfies, the device gets a 32MP front camera.

Being a gaming-centric device, the ROG Phone 9 FE comes with Air Triggers and you can add-on the optional AeroActive Cooler X Pro or the ROG Tessen mobile controller.

Powering the device is a 5,500mAh battery which is slightly smaller than the 5,800mAh capacity on the non-FE ROG Phone 9. It supports 65W fast wired charging via USB-C as well as 15W wireless charging. As you would expect from an ROG Phone, it still offers a crystalised nano-texture finish along with AniMe Vision lighting with 341 micro LEDs on the back.

The device also gets IP68-rated dust and water resistance and it runs on Android 15 with ROG UI skin on top.
