Coherent+ has announced that its payment card terminals have been deployed at token vending machines (TVM) across all stations on the MRT Kajang Line. This allows a seamless cashless experience for MRT token purchases and it even supports Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay.
As we’ve discovered last month, the card terminals were initially deployed at Bukit Bintang and Tun Razak Exchange stations on all token vending machines. The move is seen as an attempt to break Touch ‘n Go’s monopoly for cashless transactions as the government has instructed public transport providers to adopt an open payment system.
Unlike KTMB’s implementation which deployed card terminals at the gates itself, RapidKL decided to deploy the terminals on the vending machine instead. While it is easier to purchase tokens with cashless payment cards and mobile payments, commuters are still required to queue up at the vending machines.

It would have been more convenient for commuters if they could simply tap in and tap out at the gates itself. Not only it eliminates the need to buy a token, they would also enjoy the cheaper Cashless fare. So far there’s no word if the payment card terminals would be deployed on MRT Putrajaya Line and other LRT lines which are currently integrated to the MRT Kajang Line rail network.
It is worth noting that RapidKL had conducted trials for contactless MyDebit card terminals at the gates for selected LRT stations five years ago. However, it was never deployed for public use.
If you’re planning to use public transport for two or more trips in a single day, it would probably be more worth it to get the MyCity Pass which starts from RM6 per day for unlimited rides across RapidKL’s MRT, LRT, BRT, Monorail and bus lines. Unfortunately, this MyCity Pass is currently only available over the counter.
For frequent public transport users, the My50 unlimited ride pass for RM50/month still provides the best value for Malaysian citizens. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said that the My50 pass will soon be migrated from MyKad to other alternative payment methods which may include TNG card or QR payment via eWallet.
