Before deploying its own 5G network, U Mobile has revealed that its 5G service is now enhanced with 5G Standalone (SA) technology. With 5G SA, users can enjoy “true” 5G experience with lower latency and higher data rates which maximises the potential of real time applications. Unlike 5G Non-Standalone (NSA), 5G SA doesn’t rely on a 4G core as an anchor.
According to the FAQ, U Mobile is currently rolling out 5G SA to customers in phases and it is offered to users with eligible postpaid plans and compatible devices.
U Mobile supported plans and devices for 5G SA
At the time of writing, 5G SA is offered to customers on the following U Mobile postpaid plans:
- U Postpaid 98
- U Biz 98
- U Premium
- U Platinum
The orange telco also provided a list of 5G SA compatible devices but unfortunately, Apple devices are not supported yet. Here’s the list of compatible Android smartphones that can support 5G SA on U Mobile.

In order to experience 5G SA, the compatible smartphone must be running on the latest software version. You’ll know if 5G SA is active if the network name is displayed as “U Mobile 5G SA“.
According to U Mobile, its 5G SA offering is only available at selected locations and they will continue to expand to cover more 5G sites nationwide. The 5G SA service is offered at no extra cost and users can still enjoy 5G NSA and 4G connectivity outside of the coverage areas.
U Mobile is currently offering 5G via its Digital Nasional Berhad which currently has approximately 82% population coverage.
