Is the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra display as good as they say? We check it out for ourselves

Picture this… you’re out for a walk when an important email pops into your inbox. You click on the message, only to realise that you can hardly make out the words on the screen. Or you’re spending the day with your family at the park, whipping out your phone to capture a funny moment, but you just can’t see what’s on the screen clearly enough to take that photo.

Hence, having the best possible screen facing you every day is a big deal. This is because the screen on a smartphone is the most-used part as everything you run, own and capture will be displayed on it. Samsung claims that the Galaxy S24 Ultra has the brightest adaptive mobile display under the sun. So we have to check out the claim ourselves.

Samsung claims the screen is bright, even under bright sunlight

The AMOLED display on the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has a peak brightness of up to 2600 nits, which is incredibly bright. This is an improvement from the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which has a peak brightness of only 1700 nits. Additionally, the mid-range Galaxy A54 5G only peaks at 1000 nits, making the S24 Ultra’s display much brighter.

The screen of the Galaxy S24 Ultra can produce 100% of the Mobile Colour Volume in the DCI-P3 range. In a nutshell, this means that all the colours available can be displayed on screen regardless of differing levels of brightness. You can rest assured that your images will look brighter, more vivid and not washed out on the AMOLED screen.

We tested the screen of the Galaxy S24 Ultra under bright and sunny weather conditions in Malaysia and compared it with the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and the Galaxy A34 5G. As shown in the photos below, the Galaxy S24 Ultra has a brighter screen than its predecessor when used directly under sunlight. We can easily view the content on the screen without having to squint or shade it with our hands.

Samsung also claims the Galaxy S24 Ultra has a strong and durable screen

Corning and Samsung have collaborated to create a durable glass that offers a clearer display compared to its predecessor. The former claims that the Corning Gorilla Armor on the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is tough and scratch-resistant and offers improved protection against wear and tear compared to previous models.

Corning developed the Scratch Bot, a lab test to replicate micro scratches caused by daily wear and found that Armor has four times more scratch resistance than its competitors.

JerryRigEverything, a well-known YouTuber, confirmed that the Corning Gorilla Armor is indeed strong. During his usual scratch test on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, he found that even with his Mohs scale of hardness test, he found that the usual deep cut grooves did appear when scratching the screen.

The Mohs scale of hardness tests the hardness of a material by comparing it to minerals found in nature. The scale ranges from level 1, equivalent to the mineral Talc (the same material used in baby powder), to level 10, which is Diamond, the hardest mineral in nature.

In his experience, most phones that he tests tend to scratch at level 6, with deeper grooves appearing at level 7. He mentioned that he could see some scratches on the phone, but he felt that they were different because he couldn’t sense the grooves that were scratched at levels 6 and 7 using his tools. However, at level 8, he was able to physically see and feel the scratches on the Gorilla Armor screen cover.
