Tesla finally delivers Model Y to Malaysian customers

Despite being made available for bookings in Malaysia much earlier than the Model 3, Tesla has finally delivered the first batch of the Model Y to Malaysian customers after 8 long months. Around 80 units were handed over to customers at Tesla Centre Cyberjaya which is Tesla Malaysia’s sole delivery centre at the moment.

Tesla Model Y for Malaysia comes with the latest hardware setup

While the features and functionalities usually remain the same, Tesla does tend to make some changes to their vehicles. Hence, what Malaysian customers have received from today onwards might be slightly different from the version that they ordered 8 months ago.

For one, the Malaysian units come with the latest Hardware 4 (HW4) setup which provides some improvements in terms of processing power and camera capabilities. We were told by a Tesla representative that Malaysia is apparently one of the first markets in the region to receive the new setup.

It also features privacy glass but no parcel shelf

Aside from that, they also feature privacy glass on the rear windscreen and side windows for rear passengers. The side windows have also been double-glazed which helps reduce wind noise.

However, the Malaysian units don’t come with a parcel shelf though. This may cause a concern to some users since there is no physical cover to hide the contents of the boot but that being said, the privacy glass on the windscreen is already quite dark.

New colour scheme for exterior body and Gemini Wheels

Not to forget, the colour scheme for the wheel covers on the 19-inch Gemini Wheels is also different. Instead of featuring a two-tone colourway as per what you can see on our first drive experience with the Malaysian-spec Model Y last August, they are now draped in black.

Speaking about colours, Tesla Malaysia has also made some changes to Model Y colour options. The original Red Multi-Coat has since been replaced with Ultra Red which costs slightly higher too at RM11,000 as opposed to the original RM10,000 price tag.

Aside from that, the original Midnight Silver Metallic is no longer around too as it has been switched to Stealth Grey. Similarly, the new option is also priced much higher at RM7,500 as compared to the original option which costs RM5,000.

Both of these new colourways were also available on the Model 3 Highland. Tesla Malaysia continues to offer the Model Y in the base Pearl White Multi-Coat at no additional cost while Solid Black, and Deep Blue Metallic are still on the list with the same additional fee of RM5,000.

In Malaysia, the on-the-road price of the Tesla Model Y currently starts at RM200,700 not inclusive of insurance. The estimated delivery date for new orders is currently listed as Q2 2024 on Tesla Malaysia’s website.
