The Google Pixel 9 series is heading for Malaysia and the cheapest model to get started with is the Pixel 9. This is essentially Google’s answer to the iPhone 15 and the base Galaxy S24. While it runs on the same flagship chip and offers an identical screen size as the Pixel 9 Pro, there are a couple of sacrifices made to ensure a lower price.
Google Pixel 9 Specs and features
Upfront, the Pixel 9 comes with a similar 20:9 6.3″ Actua display which pushes a slightly lower 2424×1080 pixels resolution compared to the Pixel 9 Pro. While it still uses an OLED panel, the display offers a variable refresh rate of 60 to 120Hz. In terms of brightness, it pushes up to 1,800 nits for HDR and up to 2,700 nits for peak brightness. For better display durability, it also comes with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2.
Under the hood, it runs on a Google Tensor G4 chip, similar to the Pixel 9 Pro, however, it comes mated with just 12GB of RAM (Pixel 9 Pro: 16GB RAM). In terms of storage, the standard Pixel 9 is offered with either 128GB or 256GB options.
In the camera department, the Pixel 9 comes with a dual-camera setup without a telephoto camera. The rear camera array consists of a 50MP f/1.68 Octa PD wide camera with a 1/1.31″ image sensor and a 48MP f/1.7 Quad PD ultra-wide-camera with auto-focus.
For selfies, the device gets a 10.5MP f/2.2 dual PD front camera with auto-focus with a 95-degree field of view. You also get Google’s latest suite of AI-powered photography features including Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, Best Take, Add Me and Super Res Zoom up to 8x. Some features from the Pro series have been omitted including Pro controls, High-Res (up to 50MP), Video Boost and Zoom Enhanced.
The Pixel 9 still gets IP68-rated dust and water resistance and stereo speakers. In terms of connectivity, it supports sub-6GHz 5G with dual SIM (one SIM and one eSIM), WiFi 7 (802.11be), Bluetooth 5.3 and NFC.
Powering the device is a 4,700mAh battery which is said to offer over 24 hours of battery life and it is 20% longer than its predecessor. The device supports fast wired charging of up to 27W and fast wireless charging of up to 15W. Out of the box, the Pixel 9 runs on Android 14 and it will be supported with 7 years of updates.
