September has always been deemed as the month for new iPhones and Apple has once again delivered. During the company’s It’s Glowtime launch event, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro have officially been revealed to the world alongside the iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 10, and AirPods 4.
Say hello to the new Apple A18 chip
Instead of adapting the processor from last year’s Pro model, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are running on the brand-new A18 processor. Built using 3nm process technology, the chip comes with a 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine.
When compared to the A16 Bionic, Apple claimed that the CPU inside the A18 chip is 30% faster while the GPU is 40% faster as well as 35% more efficient. It is also able to deliver hardware-accelerated ray tracing with up to 5x higher frame rate when compared to software-based ray tracing.
Not enough with that, Apple also said that the A18 can achieve up to 30% higher sustained performance in gaming. This was made possible by some revamps within the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus internal components and thermal designs as well as the A18’s efficiency.
48MP Fusion camera, 12MP ultra-wide camera with macro photography
Apple has also implemented a new camera design on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. As you can see, the two cameras within the rear camera module are vertically stacked on top of each other similar to the design on iPhone X.
Housed within the module is the 48MP Fusion camera which still functions similarly as the 48MP main camera on last year’s model despite having a new monicker. Specifically, users can choose to capture images at the native 48MP resolution if they want to have all the fine details or opt for the default 24MP mode which utilises computational photography and pixel-binning to deliver high-quality images at a smaller file size.
Similarly, the Fusion camera also has optical-quality telephoto capability through 2X crop mode. However, there is the new 12MP ultra-wide camera which not only can capture up to 2.6x more light for improved low-light performance but can also capture macro photos and videos.
Action and Camera Control buttons
Just like last year’s Pro models, Apple has provided iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro with the customisable Action button. Users can set the button to perform certain actions such as muting their device, switching between Focus modes, or accessing selected apps such as Camera, Flashlight, Voice Memo, and Magnifier.
Aside from that, there’s also the all-new Camera Control button which is also available on the higher-end iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. In addition to being a camera shutter button, you can utilise it to quickly switch and adjust camera functions such as exposure and depth of field simply via swipe gesture.
Other notable features on iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus
Meanwhile, Apple has claimed that the latest version of Ceramic Shield glass that it has fitted on iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro is 50% tougher than the original Ceramic Shield. The display on both iPhone models still has a peak brightness level of 2,000 nits but they can go down to as low as 1 nit which is something not available on their predecessors.
The Cupertino giant also said that the new models have a much longer battery life. With the help of a bigger battery, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus can now provide video playback of up to 22 hours and 27 hours respectively, which is around 1 to 2 hours longer than their last years counterparts.
Not to forget, both of these new models can support high-speed wireless charging which allows them to get up to 50% charger within 30 to 35 minutes. This is provided that you utilise a MagSafe charger that is paired with a 30W adapter or higher.
