After launching two electric vehicles (MG4 and MG ZS), SAIC Motor Malaysia has officially launched the MG5 sedan for the local market. This is MG’s petrol-powered sedan which takes on the likes of the Toyota Vios and Honda City. What stands out is the wheelbase of 2,680mm, which SAIC says is the longest for a B-segment sedan in Malaysia.
MG5 Malaysia Pricing
The MG5 comes in a single variant and is officially priced at RM93,900 in Malaysia. As part of its introductory offer, the MG5 is now going for RM86,900 after the RM7,000 rebate.
The sedan comes in 5 striking colours – Nuclear Yellow, Dynamic Red, Artic White, Black Pearl and Camden Grey. The MG5 is covered by a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty on the vehicle and a 7-year unlimited mileage warranty for the engine and transmission.
MG 5 Malaysia Specs and Features
The MG5 has a rather aggressive styling compared to other B-segment sedans in the market. The sedan runs on a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine that produces 114PS (112hp) and 150Nm of torque. It is mated to an 8-speed CVT transmission and a claimed fuel efficiency of 17.5km per litre.
As a reference, the Toyota Vios’ 1.5-litre engine produces 104hp and 138Nm of torque, while the Honda City produces 119hp and 145Nm of torque. Both are also mated to a CVT.
In terms of dimensions, the MG5 is 4,675mm long, 1,842mm wide and 1,480 tall, making it even longer and wider than the Proton S70.
Fitted with 17-inch Tomahawk alloy wheels and 215/50 Maxxis Premitra tyres, the MG5 also features front and rear disc brakes although only the front has ventilated disc brakes. You can also spot MacPherson struts with a stabiliser bar on the front of the car while SAIC Motor has opted for a rear torsion beam.
Other than that, there are also automatic LED headlamps, daytime running lights, LED taillights, and rear fog lamps. Interestingly enough, the MG5 also features a power sunroof which is a nice inclusion for a sub-RM100k car.
Moving on to the interior portion of the car, the new MG5 is draped in black leather upholstery with a touch of red accents. The sedan also comes with a 6-way electrically adjustable seat for the driver although the front passenger has to settle for a 4-way manual seat.
SAIC has also provided the MG5 with a 7-inch digital instrument cluster alongside a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 6-speaker audio system, and 3 USB ports. The air conditioning system on the MG5 also features a PM2.5 air filter alongside air vents for rear passengers.
MG5 lacks a full-fledged ADAS suite
In terms of safety, the driver and passengers of MG5 are protected by 6 airbags while the sedan also has 360-degree camera as standard. When it comes to the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, things seemed inadequate though.
The car’s MG Pilot Suite offers features such as Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Rear Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, Emergency Stop Signal, and Hill Start Assist. However, the car does not come with Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and Adaptive Cruise Control which are available on some of its major competitors such as Honda City, Toyota Vios, and Proton S70.
Nevertheless, the MG5 appears to be a formidable rival to all these models especially given its sub-RM90k price tag. So, let’s see if it can inject some excitement into the B-segment market in Malaysia.
