Genting Simon Sdn Bhd announced plans to have 500 EV chargers at Johor Premium Outlets (JPO), making the shopping destination Southeast Asia’s largest EV fast-charging Hub. The new project addresses the rising demand for EV infrastructure while advancing cutting-edge technological solutions for sustainable mobility.

When fully operational, the EV chargers at JPO can offer DC charging output up to 1MW. It aims to be the region’s first publicly accessible 1MW charger.

In conjunction with the launch, visitors to JPO can enjoy free EV charging which is available until 10pm tonight (28th February 2025).

According to Genting Simon, the new charging infrastructure is made possible via a strategic partnership with Yinson Greentech’s ChargEV and DC Handal as service providers. The EV charging infrastructure is designed to accommodate a diverse range of vehicles to ensure compatibility with future advancements in EV technology, while supporting the transition to a fully electric future.

Genting Simon’s plans include the electrification of JPO’s fleet of shuttle buses. The new EV Bus Hub will connect JPO directly with Johor Bahru checkpoints and other key public transport hubs, for a more sustainable travel for both local and international visitors.

On top of that, JPO has also partnered with GoCar and drivEV to provide visitors hourly and daily EV rentals.

In line with the Twelfth Malaysia Plan to achieve net-zero harmful emissions and the aspirations of the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint, we are evolving our infrastructure to help make trips to Johor Premium Outlets more sustainable.”

She added, “With Johor Premium Outlets’ strategic location, we are a major destination for Singaporean shoppers and those travelling between Singapore and Johor. With infrastructure dedicated to supporting the growing EV market, we are proud to claim the title of Malaysia’s and Southeast Asia’s largest EV hub.”

ChargEV deploys 1MW DC Charging Hub with 30x Nozzles at JPO

ChargEV has deployed 30x DC charge points with 1MW capacity. Some nozzles are liquid-cooled and they can push as high as 1MW to cater for future EVs with higher charging capabilities.

For this location, the Charge Point Operator has deployed eLoaded’s DC Grid system similar to Elmina Lakeside Mall which features skinny free-standing eLiix DC nozzles. These DC nozzles that are flexible to reach variety of EV charging ports and they can be configured in the future with variable charging speeds and pricing. With 30 nozzles, this is the largest single eLoaded DC charger deployment in Malaysia and the DC grid system makes it easy to scale up to fulfil growing demand with minimal power losses.

However, these DC chargers by ChargEV are not officially open to the public yet as it is still pending regulatory approval. They are currently turned on under a trial period.

DC Handal has deployed 16x DC charge points with combined 1MW capacity at JPO

Meanwhile, DC Handal currently has 12x DC charge points and 2x AC charge points for the public with a total of 600kW in DC charging capacity. They have also deployed another 4x DC charge points for electric buses with 400kW capacity.

With a combined 2MW capacity from both ChargEV and DC Handal, JPO is currently the largest DC charging hub not just in Malaysia, but also in Southeast Asia.
