It is merely considering regulations that would seek to curb pollution from new gas stoves on the market, rather than existing appliances inside people's homes.
Yet the gas stove furor is emblematic of Republicans' broader efforts to thrust President Biden's environmental agenda into the nation's ongoing culture wars. With the GOP taking control of the House, these efforts could increase pressure on federal agencies as they race to finalize climate regulations over the next two years, experts say.
In particular, the Securities and Exchange Commission could succumb to political pressure to water down its landmark proposal to require big businesses to disclose their greenhouse gas emissions and the risks they face from climate change, according to experts on sustainable investing.

9:40 AM: Noted: Sen. Warren endorses Rep. Katie Porter in her Senate bid from California
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has thrown her support behind Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) in her newly announced bid for a Senate seat from California, saying the former student of hers at Harvard Law School has a “backbone of steel” and will “stand up to the rich and powerful.”
Warren's backing marks the first major endorsement in what could be a crowded 2024 field if Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) retires at the end of her term. Porter announced her bid on Tuesday even though Feinstein has not publicly disclosed her plans.
Several other Democrats in the California delegation, including Reps. Barbara Lee, Adam B. Schiff and Ro Khanna, could eventually join the race.
Warren released a video touting her support of Porter and praised her in a fundraising solicitation.
“Simply put, Katie delivers, ” Warren said in the solicitation. “She's smart and she isn't afraid. She stands up to Wall Street and Big Pharma, she holds fossil fuel companies accountable, and she fights to protect our rights. She is exactly who Californians need as their next Senator, and I'm proud to endorse her.”

President Biden issued a rare call to action on Wednesday for Congress to “unite” on legislation to “hold Big Tech accountable,” offering his most detailed road map to date for what legislation he believes lawmakers should advance to rein in Silicon Valley giants.
“It's time to walk the walk and get something done,” Biden wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed, outlining several areas for potential bipartisan action.

Second gentleman Douglas Emhoff will visit Poland and Germany, two countries where the worst acts of the Holocaust were committed, as part of the Biden administration's effort to combat rising antisemitism, the White House announced Thursday.
Emhoff, who is Jewish and the spouse of Vice President Harris, will arrive in Krakow, Poland, on Jan. 26, the White House said. While there, he plans to visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum and attend the annual commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Emhoff is then scheduled to arrive in Berlin on Jan. 30, where his itinerary includes a meeting with special envoys and coordinators working to combat antisemitism, the White House said.
Deborah Lipstadt, the US special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism, plans to join Emhoff on both legs of the trip.

8:42 AM: The latest: Biden to speak after report shows inflation slowed further in December

President Biden plans to speak later Thursday morning from the White House after a report showed inflation easing again in December, giving relief to households and businesses nationwide and offering more assurance to economic policymakers that price increases are pulling back after they soared to 40-year highs last year.

The latest inflation data, released Thursday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, showed prices rose 6.5 percent in December compared with the year before — and fell 0.1 percent compared with November.
It was the slowest rate of price increases in more than a year. Inflation is still well above normal levels, and the economy remains vulnerable to shocks that could send prices back up. But officials and American families alike have been desperate for signs that the Federal Reserves's fight against inflation is working and that the economy will continue to stabilize in 2023.

8:15 AM: Analysis: House Republicans take two 'cautious' abortion votes
House Republicans took their first abortion votes in their new role controlling the chamber, passing two pieces of legislation Wednesday with their razor-thin majority.
Writing in The Health 202, The Post's Rachel Roubein says that largely along party lines, the House passed a measure aimed at compelling doctors to provide care to infants who survive an abortion, a situation that is rare. And Republicans, along with three Democrats, voted to adopt a resolution — meaning it carries no real legislative weight — condemning attacks on antiabortion facilities, groups and churches. Per Rachel:
The proposals are more measured than the legislation Republican leaders had considered introducing if they had won a larger majority in the midterms. Republicans are already getting pressure from the antiabortion movement to go further, and at least one key lawmaker, Rep. Christopher H. Smith (RN.J.), says he's planning to again introduce his bill to restrict abortions across the country after 15 weeks.
“You have congressional Republicans, including House Republicans who are supposed to be the more ideological and less cautious, doing the most cautious thing I think they could do,” Mary Ziegler, a professor of law at the University of California at Davis, said referring to yesterday's votes.

House Republicans began their majority last week in chaotic fashion, publicly feuding for four days before electing Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as speaker on the 15th ballot.
Writing in The Early 202, The Post's Theodoric Meyer and Leigh Ann Caldwell report that lobbyists are working to prepare their clients for what McCarthy's speakership and two years of divided government will mean for them. Per our colleagues:
One Republican lobbyist, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a private conversation, received a call from a potential client Wednesday morning who was anxious about the newly created House committee set up to investigate the US relationship with China.
Other lobbyists have been fielding calls from clients concerned about a conflict over raising the debt limit later this year. And government contractors are worried that clashes over the budget will lead to cuts in federal spending.
“Everybody's a little nervous about how this shakes out,” said Tom Davis, a former Republican congressman from Virginia who's now a lobbyist at Holland & Knight. “And given the rules in the Republican conference and the like, it doesn't look like a smooth landing.”

7:35 AM: Take a look: GOP targets three Democratic senators in states Biden lost
With the 2022 election cycle in the rearview mirror, the campaign arm of the Senate Republicans is wasting little time gearing up for 2024.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee on Thursday announced a campaign targeting three Democratic senators who will be up for reelection in states that Joe Biden lost by significant margins in the 2020 presidential election: Jon Tester of Montana, Joe Manchin III of West Virginia and Sherrod Brown of Ohio.
The campaign — dubbed “Retire or Get Fired” — features ads taking aim at Tester, Manchin and Brown as too liberal for their states.
Senate Republicans are coming off a disappointing 2022 cycle. Instead of taking control of the chamber, as they had hoped, they wound up losing a net of one seat.
The map is far more challenging for Democrats in 2024, however, as they will have more incumbents defending seats in competitive states.
7:15 AM: On our radar: Nebraska governor to announce Sen. Sasse's replacement
Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen (R) is scheduled Thursday to announce his appointee to the US Senate to fill the vacancy left by the departure of Republican Ben Sasse, who officially stepped down on Jan. 8 to become the president of the University of Florida.
Former Nebraska governor Pete Ricketts (R), Pillen's predecessor, is considered the front-runner. Ricketts, who was term-limited, served as governor from 2015 to early this year.
Ricketts ran for the Senate seat in 2006 but lost to Ben Nelson (D), who left the office in 2013.
Sasse's replacement will serve until a special election is held in 2024 to fill the final two years of the term.
7:00 AM: The latest: House Democrats ask Biden to revoke Bolsonaro's visa after Brazilian riot

Some of the top Democrats on the House Foreign Affairs Committee sent a letter late Wednesday to President Biden urging his administration to revoke any diplomatic visa that former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro may be using to stay in the United States.
The Post's Isaac Stanley-Becker and John Hudson report that the letter follows a riot in the Brazilian capital on Sunday aimed at reversing Bolsonaro's loss in October, in an election that he claimed without evidence was tainted by fraud. Per our colleagues:
The defeated incumbent flew to Florida on Dec. 30, two days before the inauguration of his opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
“As we understand, since Mr. Bolsonaro entered the United States when he was still the President of Brazil, he may have done so on an A-1 visa that is reserved for individuals on diplomatic or official visits,” states the letter, led by Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Tex.) and signed by numerous others, including Rep. Gregory W. Meeks (DN.Y.), who was chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee until Republicans took control of the chamber this year.

6:40 AM: The latest: Santos was paid for work at company accused of Ponzi scheme later than previously known

Rep. George Santos (RN.Y.), who has admitted to fabricating key details of his biography, received payments as recently as April 2021 from a financial services company accused by the Securities and Exchange Commission of a “classic Ponzi scheme,” according to a court-appointed lawyer reviewing the firm's assets.
The Post's Isaac Stanley-Becker and Emma Brown report that Santos did not divulge any income from the company, Florida-based Harbor City Capital, on a financial disclosure form required of all federal candidates. Per our colleagues:
The payments the lawyer described to The Washington Post, which have not been previously reported, indicate that Santos received money at least a month after he has said he left the firm — and mere weeks before registering a business called the Devolder Organization that he has claimed as the basis for his wealth. The lawyer, Katherine C. Donlon, declined to tell The Post the amount Santos was paid.
Santos, whose election to Congress from Long Island last year helped the GOP secure its narrow majority, has apologized for what he called “résumé embellishment,” but he has refused to step aside. On Wednesday, he rebuffed calls to resign from fellow New York Republicans, including leaders of the state GOP and the party in Nassau County, which had previously endorsed him.

As Rep. Frederica S. Wilson (D-Fla.) heard colleagues share personal experiences during abortion debates over her long career, the 80-year-old said, she considered telling her own story. But she said she didn't want to relive her most painful incident.
While House members debated abortion-related legislation on Wednesday, Wilson opened up on the floor, saying that over five decades earlier, she “almost died” during a pregnancy that ended in stillbirth, The Post's Kyle Melnick and Mariana Alfaro report. Per our colleagues:
In a speech that lasted just over five minutes, Wilson said her baby was pronounced dead seven months into her pregnancy in the late 1960s. Because her pregnancy predated the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide, Wilson said, doctors were prohibited from inducing labor.
“I had to learn how, first of all, to handle the immense grief that comes with losing a child and the fact that the corpse of that child was still within me,” Wilson said. “I cried every night and all day. My little body was wretched with pain, weakness and frailty.”

A wide-ranging subpoena sent to Donald Trump campaign officials last month shows new areas of investigative interest as part of the Justice Department's extensive Jan. 6 criminal probe, according to a copy reviewed by The Washington Post, and lawyers say a grand jury focused on the day's events and related fundraising has increased its activities in recent months.
The Post's Josh Dawsey, Devlin Barrett and Rosalind S. Helderman report that the subpoena was received in early December, according to a former Trump campaign official who provided the document to The Post on the condition of anonymity because a criminal investigation is ongoing. The document seeks more than two dozen categories of information, and includes some questions that were not part of a series of similar subpoenas reviewed by The Post that were sent to several dozen people in September.
One part of the four-page legal document asks recipients to reveal if anyone other than themselves are paying for legal representation — and if so, to provide a copy of the retention agreement for that legal work. At least one other former campaign official also received the subpoena, according to that person's lawyer, who also spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid drawing attention to his client.

The Post's Devlin Barrett, Matt Viser, Tyler Pager and Perry Stein report that earlier this week, an attorney for Biden said the president's personal lawyers had discovered a small number of classified documents at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement, an institute in downtown Washington that Biden started after serving as vice president. People familiar with the matter said that discovery involved about 10 classified documents. Per our colleagues:
Biden's lawyers notified government agencies, and the Justice Department opened an investigation to see how the classified material got there and whether there was any other material that should be under government lock and key.
Legal representatives for the president found additional classified material at a second location, a person said Wednesday, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation. The person would not say when that material was found. The second batch of classified material was first reported by NBC News.
